The 36 key Verbeeck draaiorgel (street organ), de Javaan - Dutch for 'the Javanese' - was built in 2001 by the firm of Johnny Verbeeck in St. Job in't Goor, Belgium. The organ was built for the De Rijk firm in Heel, Limburg, NL. In July of the year 2009, the organ came into the ownership of its current owner, Stefan Batist. Up until March of 2014, the organ resided within in The Netherlands. In April of 2014 the organ was shipped to the United States and made its debut at the annual COAA Band Organ Rally at Lake Winnepesaukah, located in Rossville (GA).
De Javaan is a typical example of a dutch street organ. This mechanical musical instrument must be hand-cranked in order for it to play. Due to the smaller size of the instrument, it can be played indoors or outdoors. The organ has three manually selectable hand registers available. The organ grinder is able to decide which registers to select. Each register corresponds to a particular rank of pipes that all have the same sound (but different pitches). The three registers on the organ are called bourdon, violin, and piccolo. Each of these registers contains only one rank of 19 pipes, although some of the larger organs have doubled ranks. These three registers all play the melody, but there are separate notes that play the accompaniment and bass notes. The accompaniment contains 10 stopped pipes and the bass contains 6 stopped pipes. The bass notes give more "body" to the sound of the organ and are found underneath the case of the organ. |
